General Consumer Council welcomes Moyle move on energy costs

The General Consumer Council of Northern Ireland has welcomed the announcement by Mutual Energy (NIEH) of a £12.4 million contribution to offset electricity costs.

The Consumer Council has been in discussion with NIEH regarding the contribution it could make to easing the burden of relentless energy price increases.  The contribution of £12.4m from Moyle surpluses is good news for electricity consumers.

Wesley Henderson, Director of Energy at the Consumer Council said:  "This is good news in a rollercoaster year of high and volatile energy prices that have hit consumers hard and it will ease the strain on consumers’ pockets.  Whilst this will go some way towards helping all of us face rising energy bills it will be particularly welcomed by those struggling to make ends meet.”

He added: "It is important that consumers continue to see the benefits of mutualisation.  This move demonstrates that.  We will continue discussions with NIEH about how a well balanced approach to meeting consumer needs can be achieved now and in the future.”

The Consumer Council will also continue its discussions with the NI Authority for Energy Regulation and NIE as we move towards a review of electricity tariffs.  This contribution from Moyle will form part of these discussions.
