Press Release - 4th January 2010
New CEO appointed to Mutual Energy
Mutual Energy Limited, the mutual company which owns and operates the Moyle electricity interconnector, the Scotland to Northern Ireland gas pipeline and the Belfast gas transmission pipeline, has appointed Paddy Larkin as Chief Executive Officer, with effect from 1st January 2010. The appointment has been made following a competitive recruitment process.
Director of Mutual Energy’s gas business, Bill Cargo, will be stepping down from the company later in the year and this has provided an opportunity to restructure the organisation which is responsible for managing around £500 million of strategic energy infrastructure on behalf of Northern Ireland energy consumers. At the same time the company has appointed Gerard McIlroy as Finance Director and Stephen Hemphill as Group Operations Manager.
Commenting on the appointments, Mutual Energy Chairman, Peter Warry said “This is a significant step in fully integrating the Mutual Energy business, and aligning the gas and electricity businesses under a unified management structure. I look forward to working with Paddy, Gerard and Stephen in their new roles and I wish them every success”

Notes for editors:
1. Mutual Energy is a company limited by guarantee (also known as a mutual) which exists to own and operate energy infrastructure assets for the benefit of Northern Ireland energy consumers. The company does not have any shareholders so all the benefits of the low cost of capital and operational efficiencies are returned to energy consumers.
2. Biographical note: Paddy Larkin
Paddy Larkin has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Mutual Energy, with effect from 1st January 2010. He joined what was then Northern Ireland Energy Holdings in 2007 as an executive director and managing director for the Moyle Interconnector.
After studying mechanical engineering at Queen’s University Belfast, he started work with NIE at Ballylumford power station in 1991 just before privatisation. In 1992 British Gas bought Ballylumford Power station and Paddy continued to work with Premier Power, initially in breakdown maintenance before moving to the business side of the operation where he helped to oversee the change in practices from a nationalised to a private company. Later he was involved in the buy out of the long term contracts and construction of the combined cycle gas turbine and served as the station’s Chief Executive.
