Press Release - 7th October 2011

Update on Moyle Interconnector repair plan

A repair contract has been signed with the manufacturers of the Moyle Interconnector cables, with work due to begin on site in the Irish Sea on 25th October. The vessel secured to carry out the work is the North Sea Giant, which is capable of undertaking a variety of activities including subsea construction and drilling.

The cables will be repaired one after each other, with the first repair expected to be complete in early December, and the second repair in early January. This repair schedule is subject to weather risk. The interconnector will be put in service at 250MW as soon as the first cable is repaired and tested. Operation at 250MW can continue while the second cable is repaired.

In the meantime, a reconfiguration of the subsea conductors has been engineered to allow one 250MW cable to be returned to service until the repair work begins. It is expected that one cable will become available for transfers during week commencing 10th October 2011.
