Mutual Energy has joined up with the UK’s leading safe digging resource, Linesearch BeforeUdig (LSBUD), marking a significant step forward in protecting the region’s critical infrastructure.
With more than 12,000km of underground assets in Northern Ireland now registered on LSBUD, the move allows contractors, developers, and individuals undertaking excavation works to access detailed maps of underground networks, preventing accidental strikes and ensuring safer digging practices.

As a key utility provider and infrastructure owner, Mutual Energy is committed to the ongoing protection of its gas and electricity assets, which are vital to keeping Northern Ireland connected and powered.
Phillip Shortt, Senior Gas Operations Engineer at Mutual Energy, commented:
“Ensuring the continued protection of our energy infrastructure, and keeping our people safe when working around our assets, is vital. LSBUD makes safe digging much easier, and we’re thrilled the service is now available in Northern Ireland. Building on our longstanding successful relationship with LSBUD in Scotland, we are excited to extend this collaboration to Northern Ireland.”
Richard Broome, Managing Director of LSBUD, added:
We’re so pleased to be welcoming the first Members in Northern Ireland to our growing network. With existing Members and Users pushing for us to expand our services into Northern Ireland, following the success our service has had in the UK, the move marks a major milestone for the safe digging community.
“We would like to thank our founding Members Mutual Energy and VMO2 for being so proactive in their pursuit of safety. The impact of a strike can have serious ramifications, from expensive repairs and disrupted services through to reputational damage and risk to life. By joining our established service, not only are they protecting their assets from costly damage, but also keeping those people digging around them safe. Safe digging is for all.”
With the support of founding Members like Mutual Energy, LSBUD continues to expand its mission of zero strikes and enhanced safety, now bringing that commitment firmly into Northern Ireland.
